SRINAGAR: Barely two days before “Chillai Kalan”, 40-day-long severest part of winter in Kashmir valley, cold wave has engulfed Jammu and Kashmir as night temperatures further dipped in the state with Kargil recording minus 14.5 degrees Celsius – the lowest night temperature of the season.
Famous tourist destinations of Kashmir Gulmarg and Pahalgam recorded minus six and 5.3 degrees Celsius, and Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, Jammu city recorded 7.7.
Met officials said that current cold wave conditions are likely to continue until December 22 – a day after the 40-day-long harsh winter sets in Kashmir popularly known as “Chillai Kalan”.
The Chillai Kalan is followed by 20 days long “Chillai Khurd” and ten days long “Chillai Bacha”.
Of the three Chillais, “Chillai Kalan” is considered to be the severest part of the winter for which people brace up in advance.
Earlier People used to stock wood and charcoal to ward off severe winter. Dried vegetables, dried fish and different verities of pulses used to be stocked earlier as fresh vegetables are not easily available during winter.
Now times have changed the weather and It is less snow seen in winter compared to earlier times.
